NikDoesn’t that depend on school form and chosen subjects? In my ‚Abitur‘ my english exam won’t be optional for it’s my advanced course 😉

Your advanced courses are never optional, but you aren’t forced to take english as advanced course, so it really is optional for the exams. But it’s a shame that math is optional, that’s a real shame.

Well… school form I’m attending is „Berufliches Gymnasium – Schwerpunkt Wirtschaft und Verwaltung“. Means your first advanced course is given and you have only a limited choice for the second advanced course. I decided to pick English. Then I decided that I’m going to have the third exam in German instead of Maths and my oral one is biology. I’m very happy that I don’t to take maths in.

I’d have died had maths been one of my mandatory subjects…! Numbers and I are sworn enemies. I’d taken a language any day.

Well, in a year I have my matura-exam… also 4 hours maths-exam… Not sure if I should learn for it.^^

If you get your head around all those mathematical things such as algebra and stuff there’s no massive need to learn for it it. However I never had this fundamental knowledge, which made my life in school rather difficult. On the hindsight I never needed all that crap in later life anyway 🙂

Even more important: WHEN you need it (e.g. some kind of scientistific work in chemistry or pharmacology etc.) you’ll have programms and calculators doing the work for you. So, if you don’t want to install these programms, you really won’t need that again

PLUS you’d never get one of those high-end jobs with your ’simple‘ school math; you’d need a degree. And if you’re heading into the direction of a maths-based science degree you’re smarter than most anyway ^^
