Cradle of Filth be jumpin the metalcore bandwagon – 10%
Written by Shadow0fDeath on September 1st, 2004After feeling Damnation and a Day was decent and i decided to see what the new release, Nymphetamine, had to offer. Going from Death Metal, to Gothic Metal was a decent change. More suitable for their sound, and image, but after hopping right to roadrunner records the ball continues to bounce and Cradle have yet again changed sound to become more accessible. What ever happened to the passion of music you fags? It seems to be clear that with this sound change cradle of filth lost all passion for the music and continue to wallow in a world of trying to make a buck or two.
So what is this new sound? Metalcore. Yep that’s right. Killswitch Engage, Chimaira, As I Lay Dying, etc have a new kid on the block. They keep the keyboards and Dani filth, but this has got to be the most hilarious this i had ever heard. There is no musical value to this album either. Just the same Chimaira clone bullshit metal coming out these days. This attempt is beyond poor at achieving that form of status as well. There is nothing great about this new Cradle of filth. It’s just the same average metalcore album and the physical proof of Cradle of Filth’s selling out. Get tickets now! Cradle of Filth is touring with KoRn and Slipknot! They’ll be doing a split with System of a Down soon as well!
Nymphetagay – 35%
Written by K_a_z_u_y_a on September 1st, 2004I am somewhat displeased by this album.
I can’t truly express in words how much this album blows donkey fetus‘ ass, you’d have to hear it for yourself. As usual, it starts off with a standard gothic-esque Cradle Of Filth intro that seems to drag on and on and on and on relentlessly, and well, it’s downright gay.
Following the samewhat homosexual introduction, we’re greeted with the rather aptly titled „Gilded Cunt“.
We’re lead to believe this album is going to be good, and it’s not. It’s just got a layer of gold glitter sprinkled over the top to deceive us.
This is song is absolute shit, no doubt about it. This isn’t Cradle Of Filth, it doesn’t sound like Cradle Of Filth, if it didn’t have Dani Filth and the keyboards, I’d think it were Chimaira with a different vocalist; yes; this song sounds rather a lot like Chimaira, it’s like they took something from Chimaira’s playbook and added it to their own.For a reason unbeknownst to me, most of the songs seem to sound like this; 100% mallcore. The vocals are still the same old Cradle Of Filth vocals, the leads are few and far between, and the rest of the guitar riffs sound like they’re from a Chimaira album, the drumming is rather half assed, and also, you guessed it, it sounds like Chimaira’s drumming, also!
I knew that Cradle signing to Roadrunner would be a disaster, but I still held hope. I didn’t have any idea it’d be this awful.
Track 3, „Nemesis“, seems to drag on forever, and is slow almost through the entire song.
„Gabrielle“ is much of the same, slow, slow, slow, sometimes stopping for the keyboard slapped over the top of the guitars.
Again, the following track, „Absinthe With Faust“ is slow, however; there are quite a few redeeming points in this song. Amidst the Chimaira-sounding crap they’ve decided to chuck in a few leads here and there, that actually aren’t all that bad, but it still doesn’t sound like Cradle Of Filth, and there are also nice keyboard melodies slapped over the top in certain parts of the song.
„Nymphetamine Overdose“ is Cradle’s standard „we must have a long track filled with female vocals!“ song on the album, and in all honest, this song is actually DECENT. Easily the best song on the album, and it doesn’t completely sound like Chimaira! It has some nice female vocals throughout it, although, it doesn’t like the normal girl that sings for Cradle, it kind of sounds
like Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil, furthermore, there are some nice and interesting leads on this, also!„Painting Flowers White Never Suited My Palette“ …seriously, what the fuck is this? Some filler/interlude bullshit that makes no sense, and is completely out of place on the album. Pointless bullshit. Skip.
Next up, there’s „Medusa And Hemlock“ ..okay, so this album seems to be getting better! The intro is rather good, with a nice riff, followed by some Damnation And A Day-esque guitar work, nice double kick drumming, and.. oh no, we’ve started to descent into the Chimaira bullshit again. This song seems to be going downhill… And only redeems itself for the choruses.
However, at 3:15; there’s a nice, albeit, very out of place solo. Sounds like it could come from Kerry King’s reportoire. The next track, I don’t fucking know. I’m at a loss for words. It really makes my ears bleed. It’s called „Coffin Fodder“, and I’m beginning to think this CD is just that; coffin fodder.
„English Fire“ …is that an old school Cradle intro, or do my ears deceive me? Wait, yes, it is! This song is beginning to get on my nerves, almost a minute and no tempo change whatsoever. Talk about boring; this song really drags on and on. Skip!
And now we have „Filthy Little Secret“. What the fuck? That sounds kind of like a riff that’d come from Maiden, followed by a utterly disgusting lead. HATE. I hate this song already. Oh, what a surprise, here we have the Chimaira crap again, followed by that annoying, shitty lead. This is awful.
„Swansong For A Raven“; what can I say? The keyboard intro is beautiful, then the guitars kick in, and the keyboard carries on! I’m really enjoying this song. This is probably the only song to come out of Cradle’s arsenal that actually sounds like Cradle! This sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place on Dusk… And Her Embrace and the like. It’s really quite good. The guitars are nice, and there are no where near as many Chimaira moments on this track than there are in the rest of the songs, the riffs are nice, there’s frequent tempo changes, and the drumming is tight. Good song!
The follower, „Mother Of Abominations“ is another song that actually sounds like Cradle Of Filth, and not Chimaira! Again, this would fit right in right amongst Dusk… And Her Embrace. Why don’t Cradle Of Filth always sound like this? This track spans from mid speed to fast paced rather erratically, and is enough to keep the listener interested, another good song!
„Nymphetamine Fix“.. this song, also, doesn’t sound like Chimaira. It would fit in amongst some of Cradle’s slower stuff, and really isn’t too bad, a little slow for my liking, though. There are some nice female vocals, and some interesting leads. Should be enough to keep the listener interested; but if you really don’t dig slow stuff, then stay away, this isn’t your cup of tea.
Overall, this album seems to meander aimlessly in circles, occasionally sounding like Cradle, but for the most part seems to be focused on how much they can sound like Chimaira. Two good songs, a decent song, and a half decent song isn’t enough to make an album good. Not even average, there are 14 songs, and out of those 14 songs, only two are good. If they had’ve followed the formulas to „Swansong For A Raven“ and „Mother Of Abominations“, I don’t think there would’ve been any other option but to endlessly praise this album, but they don’t, so I’ve got nothing else to say but… …THIS ALBUM IS AWFUL.
Don’t waste your money… …that is unless you either a) really like Chimaira or b) dig awful mallcore crap.
Highlights:
Swansong For A Raven
