We do the same up here. The common greeting is „A’reet?“ (Alright?) or „Yalreet?“. It’s just a case of getting used to the fact that it’s not meant to be translated literately, that’s all. It’s quite common here to hear „A’reet? How’s it gannan?“ Only THEN it is a genuine question about your well-being. I assume it’s a bit similar to the common „Na alles klar?“ – you would not necessarily expect an elaborated reply about the opponent’s well-being on this phrase, would you?
