„Thicker Than Blood“ comes off DEATH ANGEL’s much-anticipated comeback album, „The Art of Dying“, due in the U.S. on May 4 through Nuclear Blast Records for their much-anticipated comeback album, „The Art of Dying“. The CD will arrive in Europe and South America one week earlier (April 27).
The group’s first CD since 1990’s „Act III“, „The Art of Dying“ (view cover „The Art of Dying“ cover artwork here) was recorded at SF Soundworks studios in San Francisco, California with producer Brian Joseph Dobbs (VOIVOD, MANMADEGOD).

DEATH ANGEL frontman Mark Osegueda recently spoke to Belgium’s Concreteweb.be about the songwriting and recording process for their forthcoming „comeback“ CD, „The Art of Dying“. Asked how they ended up working with producer Brian Joseph Dobbs on the new album, Mark said, „He was phenomenal! He’s actually someone I’ve met a long time ago. He was Bob Rock’s head engineer, and so that’s what we liked, because he used to get those tones. Since he knew the studio, he knew where to set the mikes and what not. So we wanted that, and more and less it was a conscious thing before we went into the studio. We wanted somebody who was more like an engineer to get tones. He can get the sounds that we put into words out of the speakers. And that’s what we needed. So, we sat down, and saw that we saw eye-to-eye on this. And what we wanted, especially coming out of these live situations and writing on tour, was a live sounding album, with really true, warm tones! Because I think a lot of things are missing in metal today… A lot of people tend to go for the producer at the moment, and a lot of people are getting these really over-processed, unbelievably big, unrealistic sounding albums! And with us, you know, we come from the school of…we come from even things prior than things like that! We come from the school of hearing your first time ‚Highway To Hell‘, first time hearing ‚Screaming For Vengeance‘. Hearing these tones that were just massive, yet believable, yet lively sounding. And that’s what we pretty much wanted to achieve…you know, ‚The Art of Dying‘ was something that made people feel like hearing the soul of the tone, which in a lot of these over-processed things, you don’t even hear the soul in the guitar, nor hear the soul of the snare!“
With regards to whether there’s a „connection“ between him, Kirk Hammett, Bob Rock, and Brain Joseph Dobbs, Osegueda said, „Well, I did meet Dobbs via Kirk. But that was years ago, and then it became odd that I kept meeting him through other mutual friends! And eventually it just came around full circle! He also produced the MANMADEGOD record, and VOIVOD’s last record. It was just really odd how his name kept coming up, and then he was also friends with mutual friends of mine in L.A.. You know, we talked to a few people, but he was the one who really stood out, and saw most eye-to-eye with us!“

allerdings schien mir das publikum reichlich tot zu sein. entweder waren die alle platt von den ca 500 vorgruppen, oder die werden auch nicht jünger. 😯
als ich das letzte mal death angel live gesehn hab (1988) waren am schluß bei kill as one mehr leute auf der bühne als im publikum. die band spielte liegend auf den händen oder auf den schultern des publikums auf der bühne, wärend der rest vom publikum sich einen abmoshte. holydays

"Censorship is telling a man he can't have a steak just because a baby can't chew it." Mark TwainIch finde das neue Death Angel Album ziemlich genial. Diese Band war mit ihren ethnischen Einflüssen in der Musik schon immer um einiges alternativer als das herkömmliche Thrash Zeug. Das neue Album greift sowohl Elemente von The Ultra-Violence wie auch von Act III auf und ist somit sicherlich ein guter Kompromiss, denn auch schon früher gab es alte (1987) und neue Fans (ab 1990) und offenbar wollte man beide Fangruppen welche mittlerweile ein fortgeschritteneres Alter erreicht haben zufrieden stellen. Ob es der Band aber gelingt viele neue Fans zu gewinnen ist sehr unwahrscheinlich. Ich selber kam erst vor einigen Jahren auf Death Angel im Rahmen persöhnlicher Recherchen über die Thrash Szene der 80er (bin nämlich selber erst Jahrgang 82). Thrash war damals sowieso melodischer als heute. Neuere Bands wie The Haunted müsste man im Vergleich dazu eigentlich als Death-Thrash bezeichnen. Der Härtegrad ist für damals üblichen Thrash in Ordnung und abgesehen davon kommt es Death Angel gar nicht darauf an besonders hart zu sein. Diese Musiker wollen einfach nur gute Musik machen und ihr neues Album wächst mit jedem hören wie es auch bei Alternative-Bands wie The Mars Volta der Fall ist. Wer normalerweise also eher Death Metal, Metalcore oder neueren (Death)-Thrash hört der kann mit dieser Band wohl nichts anfangen, kann sich aber auch Kommentare wie „weinerliches Gewinsel“ sparen. Im Gegensatz dazu sollten Leute die dem alternativen Rock/Metal eher nahestehen mal mehrere Hördurchgänge versuchen und diesem Album eine Chance geben. Für mich ist es die beste Reunion-Scheibe der letzten Zeit und auch sehr anspruchsvoll und durchwachsen im Gegensatz zur neuen Exodus-Scheibe welche für mich größtenteils einfach nur nervtötend ist, aber manche stehen ja gerade auf sowas. The Art of Dying bekommt von mir 6 von 7 Punkten mit Tendenz nach oben und einem „weiter so“ für Death Angel.

Ich finde die Scheibe auch ziemlich großartig. Muss ja nicht notwendigerweise immer das Härteste vom Harten sein. Aus dem Alter sind wir doch raus, oder?
Aber ein pure Neuauflage des Bay Area-Thrash vom Ende der Achtziger ist THE ART OF DYING sicher nicht, im Gegensatz zu Exodus beispielsweise. Stört mich persönlich aber nicht, denn die alten Scheiben stehen eh im Schrank… 🙂Christof

also ich muss sagen das ich das album auch sehr gut finde…….nur ich finde das manche lieder sich teilweise nach hardcore anhören als nach trash metal……..aber trotzdem ein hammer album

ich kenne bis jetzt nur drei songs von der band , aber ich finde diese genial und werde mir mal das album the art of sterbing (haha) besorgen und wenns mir gefällt hol ich mir auch noch act III …

aber 100% – ich finde das auch zum einpennen
Ich persönlich fand die Band bis auf 2-3 Songs noch nie sonderlich gut – und habe es früher schon nicht verstanden was daran so gut sein soll. Ich hab mich zwar auch auf die Re-Union gefreut – um sie mal live zu sehen – aber auf Dauer wird bei denen jedes Album recht langweilig – Act III mit Veil of Deception ist ja noch ganz ok – wobei sich für mich auf diesem Album viele Songs sehr nach den alten Anthrax Sachen anhören. Und wenn ich Anthrax hören will – brauch ich ned Death Angel hören.
Sorry – Schlitzies – aber „The Art of Dying“ ist wirklich zum sterben langweilig
