Memorial, the fifth album from Chicago instrumental trio Russian Circles, opens with a eulogy, a lace of strings wrapped longingly around solemn acoustic guitar. The little hymn fades steadily into silence, serving as the perfect feint for “Deficit,” the album’s second and most powerful track. The drums hammer immediately through the void, sheets of feedback lunging over top of the steady, dreadfully heavy bear. The same pointed misdirection that starts the track fuels its seven minutes, too.
Russian Circles start and stop, slink and speed through a series of riff contortions, alternately letting the rhythm section coil and then charge ahead. Post-rock such as this so often depends on idyllic interludes of drift. By letting that serve as this track’s prelude, Russian Circles are able to maintain forward momentum from one end of the song to the other. This thrill ride includes no intermission. Ich meineseits finde [COLOR=#ff0000]Black Metal[/COLOR] ziemlich krass und düster , langweilt aber meinermeinug auf dauer. Die erste von Behemooth ist zu empfehlen.
